India rises to top position in Cricket

India has the second largest population in the world with over 1.2 billion people as of last year, but it has been never donning the leader role in any sports for that matter. India does not have any respecable ranking in football or baseball or basket ball.
Even in case of Cricket, India has been ranked lower in the order due to the better performance of other countries like Australia, New Zealand, England and West Indies. But over the last few years the Indian cricket board I.e, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been working very hard in nurturing the cricket talent in every part of the country by spending millions of dollars.
That in turn has helped India to slowly surge ahead in the ranking year after year. Last year the country was ranked at fourth or fifth spot for most part of the year, which it was able to move to the second and third spot in the first half of 2009.
And by winning the test match against Sri Lanka last week, India was able to move up to the top position in test cricket ranking. That is indeed a dream of millions of cricket lovers in India over the last several decades.
Now India has to work hard in retaining the number one slot because Australia and South Africa are working to regain the leadership position.
